What is the difference between karat (K) and carat (ct)?
It lies in what they measure:
1. Karat (K) : measures the purity of gold
-
- Pure gold is 24K , which means it is 100% gold .
- An 18K gold alloy contains 75% gold and 25% other metals / (silver, copper, etc.).
- A 14K alloy contains 58.3% gold , and so on.
2. Carat (ct) : primary unit of measurement for the weight of diamonds and other precious stones.
-
- 1 carat is equal to 0.2 grams (200 mg) .
- A 0.5 ct stone weighs 0.1 g , while a 2 ct diamond weighs 0.4 g .
3. Point (pt) : Another unit of measurement for the carat
-
-
- A point is a subunit of the carat.
- 1 carat = 100 points
- Example :
- A 50-point diamond weighs 0.50 ct (half a carat).
- A 25-point diamond weighs 0.25 ct (a quarter of a carat) and so on.
- A point is a subunit of the carat.
-
👉In summary:
- Karat (K) = Gold Purity (10K - 14K - 18K -21K)
- Carat (ct) = Weight of gemstones
- Point (pt) = Subdivision of carat (1 ct = 100 points)
